On August 11, 2025, the Happy Pappy Foundation hosted Backpacks & Cuts 2025, and it was a day that reflected everything we believe in: community, dignity, and care across generations.

This year, we were proud to serve 83 youth and 19 seniors. What started as a goal to provide 100 backpacks turned into something much bigger: a community market, creative wellness activities, and meaningful moments of connection.

What We Offered

  • Backpacks & Hygiene Kits - We distributed over 60 backpacks filled with school supplies and a hygiene kit. Each kit included period underwear and a box of pads generously donated by #HappyPeriod — helping us provide care that reached beyond school supplies alone.

  • Fresh Haircuts - Local barbers and stylists donated their time to provide free haircuts, helping students and community members feel confident as they stepped into the school year and beyond.

  • Food & Refreshments - Guests enjoyed pizza and a special treat of chicken tenders provided by Raising Cane’s, a generous contribution that helped make the meal complete.

Barbers and hairstylists generously donate their skills to uplift the community with fresh new looks.

  • The Free Market - Thanks to the Hollywood Food Coalition, we handed out free fruits and vegetables including potatoes, rambutans (a crowd favorite), bell peppers, melons, grapefruit, and cucumbers — all pre-packaged for easy pickup. Alongside the produce, we offered racks of free clothing and shoes, complete with a dressing room for attendees to browse, try on, and take home what they loved. Many left with true gems.

  • Creative & Wellness Stations - Care extended beyond essentials. We built in activities focused on mental wellness and mindfulness:

    • Coloring Pages scattered across food tables for anyone to color while they ate and socialized — an activity that brought joy to both youth and seniors alike.

    • Bracelet-Making where attendees and volunteers alike created bracelets, necklaces, and earrings.

    • Fidget Toys placed on tables and in our Quiet Corner, a calming space for anyone needing a break from the noise. The Quiet Corner also featured a puzzle table for those who preferred a slower pace.

An attendee receives guidance in making bracelets during a craft session, highlighting the therapeutic benefits of creativity and connection.

  • Health Resources - Our partners at St. John’s Community Health set up a table to connect families with vital healthcare services, ensuring that students and their loved ones have access to year-round care.

  • Raffles & Giveaways - To add excitement to the day, we held three raffles: a $100 Raising Cane’s gift basket, a Portillo’s gift bag, and a signed copy of the children’s book Charlie’s Best Work Yet, written by our cofounder, Ris Anderson.

Why It Matters

Back-to-school season can bring both excitement and stress, especially for families navigating financial strain. At Happy Pappy Foundation, we believe every student and every elder deserves to begin the season supported. By combining practical resources with food, wellness, and creativity, we created a space where needs were met and spirits were lifted.

Thank You to Our Partners and Volunteers

This event would not have been possible without the generosity of our partners, vendors, and volunteers. From barbers and stylists to food donors and health providers, each contribution turned a simple giveaway into a day of dignity, joy, and abundance.

Looking Ahead

Backpacks & Cuts is more than just an event — it’s a reflection of who we are. We are here to uplift families, bridge generations, and ensure that care is always accessible. As we look toward the future, we carry the same mission: to strengthen families, promote wellness, and create spaces where our community can thrive.

Together, we showed that when love is shared, resources multiply, and hope grows.
